International Lecture Series
The Adaptation without Borders lecture series went beyond the narrow understanding of literary adaptation by exploring the topics of intertextuality, intermediality, appropriation, translation, transformation and remix. The digital world in particular moves back and forth between genres and media, between Twitter, TV, comics, theatre, as well as dance, photography, poetry, and more. All the lecturers teach outside of Germany, including South Korea and India. It was important to the organizers to address the global dimension of adaptation, the essential processes of convergence, appropriation and hybridization of narratives between languages and cultures. The series aims to raise awareness for Adaptation Studies; a field in cultural and media studies that has been exploring the convergence between text, media, and cultures for a long time. Adaptation can help transcend boundaries and build bridges. This also serves the purpose of modernizing historical texts as an important manifestation of the culture of remembrance: older texts only stay alive through translation, adaptation and transformation. Webex, Opencast, Stud.IP, and pre- and post-lecture project work on certain topics by student groups on Student.IP Courseware were implemented for the lecture series in the winter semester 2021/22. By bringing together international guests, the traditional lecture (online) became a sine qua non rather than a required tool of compromise. Discussions ensued primarily through the active use of the chat function. The recorded lectures were made available via Stud.IP Opencast. The lecture series was aimed at Bachelor students in English Studies, Master students in Teacher Training, Culture of the Techno-scientific World and Media Studies as well as GradTUBS doctoral students and guests from abroad. The series complimented the Case Studies in Adaptation seminar but could also be attended independently from it.
